Footage of the Aurora Borealis

`High-resolution television observations of black aurora'

Published by the American Geophysical Union in the Journal of Geophysical Research - Space Physics, 102, pp 363 - 378, 1997, this first comprehensive survey of midnight sector black auroral phenomena by T. S. Trondsen and L. L. Cogger contains a fair number of figures depicting time series of dynamic auroral phenomena. Most of the published figures are here presented in the form of MPEG movie clips, as it is believed that viewing these phenomena in such a manner does indeed add to the overall information content of the imagery.

The movies were made in the mid nineties, using very rudimentary Unix tools, and are thus not very impressive by today's standards. It may be best to manually single-frame step through the image sequences as the movies will in all probability run much too fast on current computer systems.
